Instagram Comment-to-DM Not Working? 11 Fixes

Your Reel is finally moving. The views are climbing past anything you have posted this month, the comment section is filling up with people typing LINK exactly as the caption asked, and your inbox is completely quiet, because the comment-to-DM automation that was supposed to answer every one of them hasn't sent a single message.
When Instagram comment-to-DM is not working, the cost grows by the minute, since every commenter who waits for a link that never arrives is a lead that cools off, and Meta only gives a business 7 days to send a private reply to a comment before that chance is gone for good.
In this post you will learn why comment-to-DM automations stop sending, how to tell a setup problem from a Meta rule, and the 11 fixes that solve almost every case, starting with the ones that cause the most trouble. The fixes are based on Meta's own documentation, so they apply whether you use Hypello, ManyChat or another tool, and wherever a step happens inside Hypello, we show you where to click.
Quick answer
If your Instagram comment-to-DM automation is not working, check three things first. Turn on Allow access to messages in the Instagram app under Settings, Messages and story replies, Message controls, Connected tools. Confirm that your account is an Instagram Business or Creator account that is still connected to your automation tool with every permission approved. Then test with a new comment that contains the exact keyword, posted from a second Instagram account rather than the business account itself. If the automation replies to the comment but the DM never arrives, also check the link in your DM, because Meta rejects the whole message when it contains a blocked link.
Why Instagram comment-to-DM stops working
Comment-to-DM looks simple from the outside, because someone comments and a message arrives, but several systems have to agree before that message is sent. Instagram has to notice the comment and pass it to your automation tool through Meta's API, the tool has to match the comment to a live automation and a trigger keyword, and Meta then has to accept the private reply under its messaging rules before the DM can reach the commenter's inbox or message requests.
When one link in that chain breaks, the result looks the same to you, since nobody gets a DM, yet the cause usually falls into one of three groups. The first is a setup problem, such as a disconnected account or an automation that was never switched on, which you can fix in a few minutes. The second is a Meta rule, such as the 7-day limit on private replies, which no tool can override but which you can plan around. The third is a test that was never going to work, which is more common than it sounds, because the way most people test their automation is exactly the way Instagram is least likely to respond.
The table below matches the most common symptoms to their likely cause, so you can go straight to the fix that fits what you are seeing.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| No DMs are sent on any post | Message access is off, or the account is disconnected | Fix 1, 2, 3 |
| The automation was never triggered | It is still a draft, or an account-level switch is off | Fix 4 |
| One post stays silent while others work | Wrong post selected, or a boosted or collab post | Fix 5 |
| Some commenters get the DM and others don't | Keyword mismatch, an exclude word, or a teen account | Fix 6, Instagram's side |
| One comment is ignored while similar ones work | Meta never sent that comment to your tool | Instagram's side |
| Your own test never arrives | Testing from the business account or reusing a test account | Fix 7 |
| People say they never got the link | The DM is in message requests, or waiting on a follow or a tap | Fix 8 |
| The public reply appears but the DM never arrives | Message access is off, or Meta blocked the link in your DM | Fix 1, 9 |
| Older comments never got a DM | Meta's 7-day private reply window | Fix 10 |
| DMs pause, then arrive late during a viral post | The hourly limit was reached and sending paused for account safety | Fix 11 |
| DMs stopped partway through the month | Your plan's monthly DM limit | Fix 11 |
If you aren't sure which symptom fits, working through the fixes in order is the quickest route, because they are sorted by how often each one turns out to be the cause.
11 fixes when Instagram comment-to-DM is not working
The first three fixes solve most automations that send nothing at all, the middle ones deal with automations that run but miss certain posts or people or have their message rejected, and the last two cover the time window and sending limits that Meta sets for every tool.
Fix 1: Turn on “Allow access to messages” in Instagram
Instagram has a privacy setting that decides whether connected tools are allowed to manage your messages, and when it is off, your automation can still see comments arriving but has no permission to send the DM. Meta's Instagram messaging documentation states that professional accounts need to enable the connected tools toggle before their messages can be managed through the API, and it is the cause automation tools mention most often when public replies to comments work but the DMs don't.
To turn it on, open the Instagram app and go to Settings, then Messages and story replies, then Message controls, and under Connected tools switch on Allow access to messages. Instagram renames its menus from time to time, so if you can't find it, search for connected tools in the settings search bar. You don't need to rebuild your automations afterwards, because they start sending again for new comments as soon as access is restored.
Fix 2: Use a public Instagram Business or Creator account
Comment-to-DM works through Meta's official API, and that API only serves Instagram professional accounts, which means Business or Creator accounts. A personal account can't be connected to an automation tool at all, but switching to a professional account is free and takes a minute from the Account type and tools section of your Instagram settings, and if you switched recently, give Instagram a little time to apply the change before you reconnect.
The less obvious requirement is that the account has to be public. Meta's webhook documentation says that the account that owns the media must be public and that private accounts don't receive comment notifications, so your automation tool never hears about the comment in the first place. Instagram doesn't let professional accounts go private, which means this usually happens when someone switches back to a personal account to make their profile private for a while, perhaps during a wave of spam comments. If that was you, switch back to a Business or Creator account and reconnect it to your automation tool.
Fix 3: Reconnect Instagram to your automation tool
Your automation tool talks to Instagram through an access token that Meta can cancel at any time, and the usual reasons are a changed Instagram or Facebook password, the app being removed from your account's connected apps, a permission that was declined during login, or a security check on your account. When that happens, your automations still look live in the tool but nothing can be sent, which is why this problem often appears overnight after weeks of everything working.
In Hypello, go to Settings, open the Accounts tab and select your Instagram account. If its status isn't active, click Reconnect and approve every permission Meta asks for, without deselecting your Page or Instagram account along the way, and if Hypello shows the “Your automations are not working!” alert, its Reconnect button refreshes the same permissions. Accounts that are also connected through Facebook have a separate Facebook Account section on that page with its own Reconnect button. Other tools use different wording, but the fix is the same everywhere: disconnect the account, connect it again and approve everything Meta asks for.
Once the connection is healthy, the next question is whether the automation itself is actually running.
Fix 4: Make sure the comment-to-DM automation is live
It sounds obvious, yet an automation that was never switched on is one of the most frequent reasons for zero DMs, because saving an automation and making it live are separate steps in most tools. Inro's analysis of real automations found that 58% of the automations that produced nothing had simply been left inactive.
In Hypello, open Automations and check that the automation is live rather than a draft, paused or stopped, and if it isn't, open it and click Go Live. Then check the two account-level switches that override every individual automation: open Settings, select the account on the Accounts tab, and under Global Settings make sure Global Automations and Comment Automations are both on, because if either one is off, no comment automation on that account will run. Those switches exist so you can stop everything at once when you need to, which also makes them easy to forget once you are ready to start again. If an AI assistant created the automation for you through Hypello MCP, remember that it stays a draft until you approve it going live.
Fix 5: Check the automation is on the right post or Reel
A comment automation only answers comments on the posts it is attached to, so an automation built for last week's Reel stays silent on today's post even when the keyword is identical. In Hypello's DM from Comments automation, the Select Instagram Posts or Reel step decides this: you can pick a single post, choose Any post or reel so the same keyword works across all your content, or use Next post automation on paid plans to prepare the automation before the post goes live, so the first comments are answered too.
Some kinds of posts need extra attention. Comments on boosted posts and Reels come through Meta's advertising systems, which an Instagram-only connection can't access, so you need to connect the Facebook account that manages your linked Page, as our guide to boosted post comment automation explains step by step. Collab posts can also behave differently, because automation tools may not respond to comments on a post your account was invited to rather than one it published, so test on a post your own account created. Comments during a broadcast need their own automation type, which our guide to Instagram Live comment automation covers.
With the right post selected, the remaining question is whether each comment actually matches your trigger.
Fix 6: Fix keyword triggers that don't match comments
When an automation works for some commenters but not others, the keyword is the first thing to check, because keyword triggers match the words in a comment rather than the intent behind them. A trigger set to GUIDE may not match someone who types “guides pls”, “giude” or “can you send the link”, even though every one of them wants the same thing, so start by reading the comments that didn't get a DM and comparing them with your trigger.
In Hypello you can add up to 30 keywords under Set Trigger Keywords, so add the variants and misspellings people actually use, and check that none of the words in your exclude list appear in those comments, since an excluded word blocks the DM even when the keyword matches. If you aren't sure whether the keyword is the problem, switch the trigger to Any keyword for a short test, and if the DM then arrives, you know the automation works and only the matching needs adjusting. It also helps to check Instagram's own filters, because if your Hidden Words list includes your trigger word, Instagram may hide the comment before your automation ever sees it. A short, distinctive keyword that appears clearly in your caption is the best prevention, and our complete guide to comment-to-DM automation has more advice on choosing one.
Fix 7: Test your Instagram auto DM from a second account
Many reports of a broken automation turn out to be a broken test. The most common mistake is commenting from the business account itself, because the automation is built to reply to other people, and a comment from the account that runs it isn't a reliable way to check whether it works. Use a second Instagram account instead, such as your personal account or a colleague's, and make sure it belongs to an adult, for reasons we cover in the section on Instagram's side below.
The second mistake is testing again and again with the same account. Meta allows only one private reply per comment, and automation tools generally avoid sending the same DM to one person twice, so an account that has already received the message may not get it again. Leave a new comment from a fresh account after the automation is live, wait a minute, and then check both the main inbox and the message requests of the test account, which leads straight to the next fix.
Fix 8: Check message requests and gated DMs
Sometimes the automation works perfectly and the person simply doesn't see the message. Meta's private replies documentation explains that the DM goes to the commenter's main inbox only if they follow your account, and to their message requests if they don't, which is a folder many people never open. Mentioning in your caption, or in a public reply under the comment, that non-followers should check their message requests saves you a lot of “I didn't get it” comments.
The other case is an automation that sends a first message but holds the link back by design. In Hypello, Ask To Follow Before Sending DM asks people who don't follow you to follow first and sends the DM once they follow and tap the button again, while an opening message sends a short message with a button and delivers the main DM only after the person taps it. Both are useful, the first for growing followers and the second because it lets the conversation continue once the person responds, but anyone who stops at that step never receives the link. If your results show plenty of first messages and few link clicks, turn the extra step off on one automation and compare, and use follow-up DMs to remind people who opened the message but didn't act on it.
A DM that lands in message requests still arrives, but there is one case where Instagram refuses to deliver the message at all, and it is the one people suspect least.
Fix 9: Check that Meta isn't blocking the link in your DM
Easy to miss
If the link in your DM points to a URL that Meta has blocked, Instagram rejects the entire message, not just the link. The commenter receives nothing, the public reply can still appear under their comment, and neither of you gets a notice from Instagram explaining why, so test every link before an automation goes live.
This is the rarest cause on the list, but it is also the hardest to spot, because everything else checks out: the account is connected, the automation is live, the keyword matches, and the public reply may even appear under the comment. Meta checks the links in messages sent on its apps, and when a link points to a URL or domain it has flagged as spam, unsafe or against its Community Standards, it refuses to deliver the message that contains it, so the whole DM is dropped rather than sent without the link.
Links are often blocked for reasons that have nothing to do with you. According to Linkly, Meta can block a single URL, a subdomain or an entire domain, and redirects and link shorteners can trip the filter as well, which makes popular shorteners, free website builder subdomains and affiliate links that pass through several redirects the usual suspects. A link that worked last month can also be blocked today, because Meta updates its lists all the time.
To check a link, paste it into Meta's Sharing Debugger, which shows a warning when Meta blocks a URL, and send it to a friend in an ordinary Instagram DM to see whether it goes through. If it is blocked, switch to a direct link on your own domain without a shortener or a chain of redirects, and if your own domain is blocked, ask Meta to review it through the link the debugger shows, which can take several weeks. It also helps to put the link on a button rather than pasting the raw URL into the message text, because sending many messages with raw URLs in a short window is a pattern Meta's spam filters watch closely, and a Hypello DM can carry up to three link buttons.
The last two fixes are about limits that Meta sets for every tool, which you can't switch off but can plan around.
Fix 10: Reply to missed comments within Meta's 7-day window
Comments that arrived before the automation was live, or while it was disconnected, aren't answered automatically once you fix the problem, because automation tools react to new comments as they come in. Meta also sets a hard limit here, since a business can send one private reply to the person who commented, only within 7 days of when the comment was made, and after that no tool can send a DM in response to it. Instagram Live is stricter still, because private replies to Live comments can only be sent while the broadcast is running.
Hypello's Re-Trigger feature, available on paid plans, responds to eligible comments from the past seven days that arrived before your automation, which makes it the quickest way to recover after a disconnection or a late setup. For anything older, the practical option is a public reply asking people to comment again, which creates a new comment with a new 7-day window. Because the first private reply is the only message you can send unless the person answers, put the link or code in that first DM rather than saving it for later.
Fix 11: Let the hourly DM limit reset to keep your account safe
When a post goes viral, DMs that pause for a while and then arrive late usually mean your account has reached its hourly limit, not that something is broken. Meta's published rate limit for private replies to comments on posts and Reels is 750 calls per hour for each Instagram professional account, and the figure of 200 DMs an hour that circulates online is a pacing choice some tools make rather than a number Meta publishes. A Reel that brings in thousands of comments in an hour will therefore take time to answer in full, whichever tool you use.
The pause is there to protect your account. Messages pushed through after the limit is reached simply fail, and sudden bursts of automated activity are the kind of behaviour that can put an account at risk of restrictions, so a well-built tool slows down before it gets there. Hypello tracks Instagram's hourly limits across all your automations, enters a cool-off period as your account gets close to one, and moves pending messages into its DM Safety Queue, which sends them in order at a steady pace once it is safe to continue instead of dropping them. If you see DMs waiting during a busy hour, leave the automation running rather than reconnecting or rebuilding it, because the queued messages go out on their own, and our guide to DM automation that doesn't look like spam explains why steady pacing matters.
Plan limits work differently, because they stop sending until the limit resets or you upgrade: Hypello's Free plan includes 1,000 DMs a month and the paid plans include unlimited DMs, so if your automation stopped partway through a busy month, check your usage first.
When comment-to-DM is not working because of Instagram
If you have worked through all eleven fixes and some people still don't receive the DM, the cause may sit with Meta, with the commenter or with your account's standing, where your settings can't help. These problems affect every automation tool in the same way, so switching tools won't solve them.
Meta doesn't send some comments to your automation tool
Every comment-to-DM tool, whether that is Hypello, ManyChat or another provider, finds out about new comments through webhooks, which are notifications Meta sends to the tool the moment a comment is posted. This works for the vast majority of comments, but not for all of them, and developers on Meta's developer forum have reported that webhooks arrive for most comments while a share of comments never trigger one, across several accounts and with no fix from Meta in that thread. In practice it can affect one post or one person while everything around it works, and because the tool never learns that the comment exists, the automation can't reply even though every setting is correct.
This is a common Meta-side issue rather than a fault in your setup, so reconnecting or rebuilding the automation won't change it, and it usually clears on its own. If a commenter tells you they didn't get the DM, asking them to comment again while the post is still fresh usually works, because a new comment produces a new notification, and if it keeps happening on one post, send support the details listed at the end of this section so the team can check whether Meta ever delivered the comment.
Teen Accounts and the commenter's own settings
Teen Accounts are the most common reason a single commenter can't be reached, because Meta places users under 18 in its strictest messaging settings, so they can only be messaged by people they follow or are already connected to, and a teenager who comments without following you may not be reachable by DM at all. A commenter can also delete their comment before the DM is sent, or have blocked or restricted your account.
Account restrictions and Meta outages
Your own account's standing matters as well. If Instagram has limited what your account can do, for example after a wave of reports or unusual activity, private replies can fail until the restriction lifts, so check Account Status in the Instagram app and read our guide on what to do when your Instagram account is restricted or banned. Meta's systems also have bad days, and Meta Status shows when Instagram or its APIs are having problems, so look there before you rebuild anything.
What to send support
When you contact support, send the link to the post, the exact text of a comment that didn't get a DM, the commenter's username and the time they commented, because that lets the team trace that specific comment through Meta's API instead of guessing. Hypello's team is reachable at hello@hypello.com and through the Hypello Help Center.
Get your Instagram auto DMs working again
Most comment-to-DM failures come down to a handful of settings rather than anything mysterious inside Instagram. Turn on Allow access to messages, keep a public Business or Creator account connected with every permission approved, and make sure the automation is live and attached to the right post with keywords that match what people really type. Test with a fresh comment from a second account, remember that people who don't follow you find the DM in their message requests, and check that Meta isn't blocking the link in your DM, because a blocked link stops the whole message. Plan around Meta's 7-day window, treat a pause during a busy hour as your account being protected rather than a fault, and know that a comment Meta never passes on can't be answered by any tool.
A few habits keep it from breaking again: test every new automation on the day you publish it, check your connection after you change your password, and put everything the person asked for in the first DM. Following the rules in our guide to safe Instagram automation keeps your account in good standing too. If you are tired of chasing these problems in another tool, Hypello's Re-Trigger, DM Safety Queue and reconnect alerts are built for exactly these situations, and you can see how it compares in our Hypello vs ManyChat comparison or start for free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Instagram auto DM not sending?
The most common reasons are that Allow access to messages is turned off in Instagram's Connected tools settings, the account's connection to your automation tool has expired, or the automation isn't live on the post people are commenting on. Check those three first, then test with a new comment from a second Instagram account.
Why does my automation reply to the comment but not send the DM?
When the public reply appears but the DM never arrives, the usual cause is that Allow access to messages is turned off in Instagram, which lets a tool reply to comments but not send messages. The other cause is a link in your DM that Meta has blocked, because Instagram rejects the entire message when it contains a blocked URL. Check the setting first, then test the link in Meta's Sharing Debugger and in a normal Instagram DM.
Why are my automated Instagram DMs delayed during a viral post?
Your account has most likely reached Instagram's hourly limit. Meta allows 750 private replies to post and Reel comments per hour for each professional account, and sending more puts the account at risk, so Hypello pauses for account safety and holds the remaining messages in its DM Safety Queue, then sends them in order once it is safe to continue.
Why didn't people who commented before I set up the automation get a DM?
Automations respond to new comments as they arrive, so comments made earlier aren't answered automatically. Meta allows one private reply per comment within 7 days of the comment, so Hypello's Re-Trigger feature on paid plans can respond to eligible comments from the past seven days, but older comments can't receive an automated DM.
Why does comment-to-DM work for some people but not others?
Usually because some comments don't match your trigger keyword, contain one of your excluded words, or come from people who already received the DM. Commenters who don't follow you receive the message in their message requests, and Instagram Teen Accounts can only be messaged by people they follow, so some commenters may never see it.
Why didn't I get the DM when I tested my automation?
Comments from the business account that runs the automation aren't a reliable test, and an account that already received the DM may not get it again. Test with a new comment from a second, adult Instagram account, and check that account's message requests as well as its main inbox.
Where is the Allow access to messages setting on Instagram?
In the Instagram app, go to Settings, then Messages and story replies, then Message controls, and switch on Allow access to messages under Connected tools. Instagram renames its menus from time to time, so if you can't find it, search for connected tools in the settings search bar.
Does comment-to-DM work on private Instagram accounts?
No. Comment-to-DM automation needs an Instagram Business or Creator account, and Meta doesn't send comment notifications to automation tools for private accounts. Professional accounts can't be made private, so if you switched to a private personal account, switch back to a professional account and reconnect it to your automation tool.
