Instagram Live Comment Automation: How to DM Viewers Instantly

You are twenty minutes into an Instagram Live, the energy is high, and you say the line you planned: comment LINK and I'll send it to you. Within seconds the chat fills with LINK, LINK please, and a row of fire emojis, and the comments scroll past faster than you can read them, let alone answer them without stopping the broadcast.
In this post you will learn how Instagram Live comment automation works, the rules Meta sets for it, how to set it up in Hypello step by step, which campaigns suit it, and how to fix DMs that don't send, so every viewer who asks receives their link while they are still watching.
Quick answer
Yes, Instagram Live comments can trigger DMs automatically. With Hypello's DM from Live Comments automation, anyone who comments your keyword during a Live receives a DM with your link, code, or resource within seconds. It only works while the broadcast is running, because Meta stops Live comment notifications and private replies when the Live ends, so set it up with Any live before you start streaming.
What is Instagram Live comment automation?
Instagram Live comment automation connects a viewer's public comment to a private message. When someone comments a keyword during your broadcast, such as LINK, PRICE, or DEMO, they automatically receive a direct message with what you promised, whether that is a product page, a discount code, a registration link, or a free resource. The comment stays in the Live chat, while the answer arrives privately in their inbox.
In Hypello, this is the DM from Live Comments automation. It follows the same idea as comment-to-DM on posts and Reels, but it listens to the comments on your Live, which is a separate trigger with its own rules. It is most useful for creators, coaches, webinar hosts, and brands that sell or launch on Live, because those broadcasts produce the most requests in the shortest time. If keyword DMs are new to you, our complete guide to comment-to-DM automation covers the basics.
Why automate Instagram Live comments?
Live comments behave differently from comments on a post. On a regular post, comments wait for you and you can reply an hour later. On a Live, they appear in a fast stream on top of your video, and once they scroll away they are easy to miss, even for the host who is looking right at them. You are also presenting, watching the time, and talking to guests, so copying a link into dozens of separate DMs is not realistic, even with a team member helping.
Timing matters as much as volume. Someone who comments during a product demonstration is interested at that moment, while a reply the next morning competes with everything else in their inbox. Automation answers these buying signals while they are fresh, takes the repetitive replies off your plate, captures contact details from interested viewers when you choose to, and lets you stay focused on the broadcast itself. It won't make a weak offer sell, but it makes sure that people who already want something from you actually receive it.
How Instagram Live DM automation works
Now that the why is clear, here is what happens from the moment you start streaming to the moment a viewer takes action.
- 1
You go live
You announce one clear call to action, such as comment LINK.
- 2
A viewer comments
Someone types the keyword in the Live chat.
- 3
Hypello checks it
The comment is matched against your keywords.
- 4
A private DM is sent
The viewer receives your message with a link button.
- 5
They take the next step
They open the offer, share an email, or reply.
The DM is a private reply to the viewer's comment, which is why Instagram shows it as a response to what they wrote. Below is what a viewer sees seconds after commenting LINK.

Instagram Live automation rules and limitations
This is the part most guides skip, and it is the part that decides whether your Live automation works. The rules below come from Meta's developer documentation unless we say otherwise.
It only works during an active broadcast
Meta sends notifications for comments on Live media only during the live broadcast, and private replies to Live comments can no longer be sent once the Live has ended. Your automation must therefore be running before you go live, and it stops responding when you finish.
One private reply per comment, then the conversation window
The first DM is a private reply, and Meta allows only one message per comment. Put everything the viewer needs into that first message, usually a short line of text and a button. If the viewer replies, the conversation can continue under Instagram's standard messaging rules, which is also what makes steps such as asking for an email address possible.
Repeated comments from the same viewer
Because each comment can receive only one private reply and automations are built to answer a request once, plan for one DM per viewer rather than one per comment. A viewer who types LINK five times doesn't need five messages, and if they want something else, they can reply to the DM they already have.
Replays and saved Lives
Comments left on a replay after the broadcast won't trigger Live comment automation. If you want late viewers to receive the link, post the replay or its best moments as a Reel and give it a regular comment-to-DM automation, which we explain in the section on measuring results and follow-up.
Co-hosted and guest Lives
Hypello listens to Lives broadcast from the Instagram account you have connected. If you appear as a guest on another account's Live, the comments belong to their broadcast, so your automation won't respond to them. Run the call to action on Lives that you host.
Account requirements and the official API
Live comment automation requires an Instagram professional account (Business or Creator) connected through Meta's official API, and Meta only delivers comment notifications for public accounts. Tools that rely on the official API, as Hypello does, work within these rules instead of trying to get around them, which is what keeps your account safe.
How to set up Instagram Live comment automation in Hypello
With the rules in mind, setting up the automation takes a few minutes. The labels below match Hypello's current interface, so you can follow along in your dashboard.
1. Connect your Instagram professional account
Sign in to Hypello and connect your Instagram Business or Creator account. If it is already connected, check in Settings that it shows as active, because an expired connection is a common reason automations stop working.
2. Create a DM from Live Comments automation
Open Automations, click Add Automation, and choose the DM from Live Comments template. Name it after the launch or event it belongs to, so it is easy to find later.
3. Choose which Live it applies to
Under Select a Live, switch on Any live to run the same automation on every broadcast. This is the safest option, because you can set it up days in advance and it is ready the moment you start streaming. If you are already live and want an automation for that broadcast only, select the Live that is happening now from the list.
4. Set the trigger keywords
In Set Trigger Keywords, add the word you will say on air, such as LINK. You can add up to 30 keywords to catch variations and typos, or choose Any keyword so every comment receives the DM. Use the exclude list to skip comments containing words you don't want to respond to.
5. Write the first DM
Write a short Welcome Message that thanks people for watching and delivers what you promised, with a button that opens the link. Keep it specific to the Live so viewers recognise it straight away, and remember that this first message is the one Meta guarantees you can send.
6. Add the optional steps that fit your goal
You can turn on Ask To Follow so that viewers who don't follow you yet are asked to follow before the DM is sent, ask for an email address or phone number before sharing a resource, add Follow-Up DMs for people who didn't click, or set a short delay before the DM goes out. Ask To Follow is included on the free plan, while collecting contact details, follow-ups, and reply delays are part of Hypello Pro.
7. Activate and test before the real broadcast
Click Go Live to activate the automation. Then run a short test Live at a quiet time, comment your keyword from a second Instagram account, and confirm that the DM arrives with the right link before an important broadcast.
8. Go live, announce the keyword, and review the results
During the broadcast, say the keyword clearly and repeat it at key moments. Afterwards, open the automation in Hypello to review how many DMs were sent and how many links were clicked, which we cover in the measuring section below.
Instagram Live automation examples to copy
Once the automation works, the next question is what to offer. Each example below pairs a call to action with a first DM you can adapt, the next step for the viewer, and the business outcome it supports.
Live product launch
Call to action: “Comment SHOP to get the product link.”
Thanks for joining the launch! Here's the new collection from today's Live. Sizes are limited, so tap below to see what's left.
The viewer opens the product page from the button, and the outcome is direct sales from the people most excited about the launch. Fashion and beauty brands often add a launch-only code to the same message.
Online coaching
Call to action: “Comment COACH to get the program details.”
Great to have you on the Live! Here are the full details of the 8-week program, including what's included and the start date.
With Ask for email turned on, the viewer shares their address before receiving the details, and the outcome is a qualified lead your team can follow up with. If you prefer an AI agent to handle these questions, see our AI Leads Agent.
Free guide or resource
Call to action: “Comment GUIDE to get the free checklist.”
Here's the checklist I walked through on the Live. Save it so you have it next time you need it.
The viewer downloads the resource, and the outcome is goodwill and a reason to follow you, especially if Ask To Follow is switched on. This works well for Q&A sessions and tutorials.
Webinar or event registration
Call to action: “Comment JOIN to get the registration link.”
You're almost in! Tap below to register for Thursday's workshop, and we'll send you a reminder before it starts.
The viewer registers, and the outcome is attendees for a deeper session. Sending registrations to Mailchimp or Klaviyo, as described in our Instagram lead generation guide, keeps the reminders going by email.
Discount campaign
Call to action: “Comment DEAL to get today's offer.”
Here's your code for watching live: LIVE15 for 15% off until midnight. Tap below to shop.
The viewer shops with the code, and the outcome is sales you can attribute to the Live, because the code only exists in that DM. Keeping the code private also stops it spreading beyond your audience.
Instagram Live automation vs. Reel and post automation
Live comment automation is often confused with ordinary comment-to-DM, but in Hypello they are separate automations with different rules. The table below shows how they compare.
| Feature | Live comment automation | Reel and post comment automation |
|---|---|---|
| Hypello template | DM from Live Comments | DM from Comments |
| Trigger | A comment during your Live | A comment on a post or Reel |
| When it can reply | Only while the broadcast is running | Within 7 days of the comment |
| Content selection | Any live, or the Live that is on now | Any post or reel, or a specific post |
| Public comment replies | Not available | Available, with rotating variations |
| Late or missed comments | Not possible after the Live ends | Re-Trigger (Pro) for the past 7 days |
| Best for | Live selling, demos, and launches | Evergreen content and viral Reels |
| Example call to action | Comment SHOP during the Live | Comment LINK under this Reel |
The two work best together. Run Live automation during the broadcast, then post highlights as a Reel with a regular automation, as described in our guide to sending links in Instagram DMs, so people who watch later can still get the link.
How to say your call to action on Live
Automation only works if viewers know what to type, so plan the call to action as carefully as the content. Choose one short keyword that is easy to spell and hard to confuse, and say exactly what people will receive, for example: comment LINK and I'll send you the product page in your DMs. Repeat it at the moments that matter, because new viewers join throughout the broadcast, and pin a comment with the keyword so late arrivals always see it.
It also helps to tell viewers who don't follow you to check their message requests, since DMs from accounts people don't follow can land there instead of the main inbox.
How to measure the results of your Live
Views and comment counts show interest, but they don't tell you whether the Live helped your business. Open the automation in Hypello after the broadcast and use its stats, together with your shop or analytics, to follow each step from comment to result.
| Metric | Where to find it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| DMs Sent | Automation stats in Hypello | How many viewers asked and received your message |
| DM Links Clicked | Automation stats in Hypello | How many viewers opened the link you sent |
| New Contacts | Automation stats in Hypello | How many new people entered your audience |
| Follow Requests Sent | Automation stats in Hypello | How many non-followers were asked to follow |
| Follow-Up DMs Sent and clicked | Automation stats in Hypello | Whether reminders brought people back |
| Purchases or sign-ups | Your shop, booking tool, or email platform | The business result of the Live |
To connect DMs to sales, use a code that only exists in the Live DM, or a tracked link built with our free UTM link generator, so your shop or analytics can show how many orders came from the broadcast. Compare these numbers across Lives to learn which offers and keywords work best for your audience, rather than relying on general benchmarks.
After the stream, keep the conversation going in the right places. Follow-Up DMs can remind viewers who opened the message but didn't click, collected emails can go to Mailchimp or Klaviyo for a welcome sequence, and a Reel made from the replay can carry its own comment-to-DM automation for people who missed the Live.
Troubleshooting Instagram Live DMs that don't send
If viewers say they didn't receive the DM, work through these checks in order. Most problems come from the setup rather than from Instagram itself.
- Is the right Instagram professional account connected, and does it show as active in Settings?
- Is the DM from Live Comments automation activated with Go Live, and set to Any live or this broadcast?
- Is Global Automations switched on in your account settings?
- Does the comment match a trigger keyword, and is it not caught by your exclude list?
- Was the Live still running when the viewer commented, and were comments turned on for the broadcast?
- Was the comment made on a Live you host, rather than one where you were a guest?
- Has this viewer already received the DM for an earlier comment?
- Did you test from a second account rather than the business account itself?
- Could the DM be in the viewer's message requests because they don't follow you?
One edge case is worth planning for on very large broadcasts. If a Live brings so many comments that your account approaches Instagram's hourly limits, Hypello's DM Safety Queue paces the remaining messages, and because Meta doesn't allow private replies after a Live ends, it helps to keep the broadcast running for a few minutes after your final call to action.
Answer every viewer while they are still watching
Instagram Live creates attention that is hard to match, but it also creates more requests than any host can answer while presenting. Live comment automation closes that gap by sending each viewer what they asked for within seconds, as long as it is ready before the broadcast begins, because Meta only allows these replies while you are live.
Set up a DM from Live Comments automation with Any live, choose one clear keyword, put everything that matters in the first DM, measure what happens after the click, and turn the replay into a Reel with its own automation. You can start on Hypello's free plan and test it on your next Live.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Instagram Live comments automatically trigger a DM?
Yes, through tools that use Meta's official API and support Live comments specifically. Hypello's DM from Live Comments automation sends a DM when someone comments your keyword during your Live. Check that a tool supports Live comments rather than only post and Reel comments, because they are separate triggers.
How do I automatically DM someone who comments on Instagram Live?
In Hypello, create a DM from Live Comments automation, switch on Any live, add your keyword, write the message with a link button, and click Go Live before your broadcast starts. Viewers who comment the keyword receive the DM while you are still streaming.
Can I send a link to viewers during an Instagram Live?
Yes. Links in Instagram comments aren't clickable, but links in DMs are. Ask viewers to comment a keyword, and Hypello sends the link as a button in their DMs during the broadcast, so they can open it without leaving the Live.
Does Instagram Live comment automation work after the Live ends?
No. Meta only sends notifications for Live comments during the broadcast, and private replies to Live comments can't be sent once the Live has ended. To reach people who watch later, share the replay or the best moments as a Reel and add a regular comment-to-DM automation to it.
Can the same viewer receive multiple automated DMs during a Live?
Plan for one DM per viewer. Meta allows one private reply per comment, and comment automations are designed to answer a request once, so a viewer who repeats the keyword shouldn't expect a new message each time. If they need something else, they can reply to the DM, which opens Instagram's standard messaging window.
Is Instagram Live DM automation safe to use?
It is safe when the tool uses Meta's official API and only messages people who asked. Hypello connects through Meta's official API, sends DMs only to viewers who comment your keyword, and paces messages to stay within Instagram's limits. Keep follow-ups relevant and avoid sending unrelated promotions.
What is the difference between Live comment automation and Reel comment automation?
Live automation responds to comments during a broadcast and stops when the Live ends. Reel and post automation responds to comments on published content, can send a private reply within 7 days of a comment, and can also post public replies. In Hypello they are separate automations: DM from Live Comments and DM from Comments.
Which businesses benefit most from Instagram Live automation?
Any business that uses Live to sell, teach, or launch: fashion and beauty brands running live shopping or product drops, coaches and course creators, webinar hosts, affiliate creators sharing product links, and brands running live giveaways.
Is Instagram Live comment automation free in Hypello?
The DM from Live Comments automation and Ask To Follow are available on Hypello's free plan, which includes 1,500 DMs per month. Collecting emails or phone numbers, Follow-Up DMs, and reply delays are part of Hypello Pro.
Editorial note: Meta's rules for Live comments and private replies can change. The technical details in this article are based on Meta's developer documentation and Hypello's current product at the time of writing.
