How to automate an Instagram giveaway

    Write your official rules

    Prepare a rules page that covers eligibility, dates, how the winner is chosen, and the disclosures Instagram's Promotion Guidelines require.

    Open Automations, click Add Automation, choose DM from Comments, and select your giveaway post.

Confirming every entry

Each comment with your entry keyword gets a public reply and a DM. The DM is the right place for details that don't fit in a comment: the official rules, the closing date, how you'll choose the winner, and how you'll contact them.

Choose Any keyword if every comment counts as an entry, or use a specific word such as WIN so you can tell entries apart from questions about the prize.

Following as an entry requirement

If following your account is part of the rules, turn on Ask To Follow Before Sending DM. Hypello checks whether each entrant follows you. If they don't, they see your message and a button asking them to follow first, and the confirmation DM arrives once they follow and tap again, so you don't have to check profiles by hand.

Handling a flood of comments

Popular giveaways can bring more comments in an hour than Instagram is comfortable with. Limit public replies skips some public replies to keep activity at a safe level, while every entrant still receives the DM. Rotating several reply variations keeps the comment section natural, and Exclude keywords lets you skip comments that contain words you don't want to respond to.

Contacting the winner safely

Asking entrants for an email (Hypello Pro) gives you a way to reach the winner outside Instagram, which helps protect people from impersonation accounts that message entrants pretending to be you. With the entrant's consent, those emails can go to Mailchimp or Klaviyo so you can invite them to your newsletter after the giveaway.
